Buddhist monks are easily recognizable with their saffron robes and shaved heads and each of these attributes has deep meaning. They symbolize the monk's commitment to the Buddha'sreachings. Most monks only enter the community or Sangha for a short period, usually a few months but some choose to live their lives as monks. In countries such as Cambodia, especially in rural areas, people regard a man as incomplete if he has not been ordained for a period. One of the reasons young men enter the Sangha is to make merit for their parents and to learn the dharma or teachings of the Buddha.

Siem Reap shines in culinary competition

The chefs from Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort and Spa defeated nine other teams to win the first “Khmer Mystery Black Box” contest, in which participants were forced to quickly improvise recipes from a box of secret ingredients.

Angkor Palace chef Phaing Sophai confessed he felt nervous before the start of the competition, both by the size of the 300 strong crowd watching him, and from fear of what he would find when he opened his team’s box.

“It was hard for me in the beginning because I could not see the ingredients.When we opened the closed box, we saw both Cambodian and foreign ingredients inside. Immediately, a Cambodian recipe named ‘Plea’ came up in our minds, so we decided to cook that dish,” he said.

“Plea doesn’t really need a lot of ingredients but because the competition required us to use more than 16 ingredients for a dish, we invented a seafood recipe by adding more flavours. We also tried using some foreign ingredients too, and it worked!”

While the Khmer mystery box portion of the competition was the most keenly awaited challenge of the day, hospitality staff also competed in bartending, fruit carving, barista and bed- making challenges, in order to win cash prizes.

Cambodian Restaurant Association President Van Porleng told the Post, he hopes the contest will be held annually in future as a sort of culinary Olympics, where local chefs and hospitality workers can show off their skills to the world.

“The Cambodia Restaurant Association aims to organise this competition every year, both in order to increase the standard of the industry but also as a first step towards participating in international competitions all over the world. We also want to organise workshops and conferences where hospitality staff can enrich their professional knowledge,” he said.

More than 80 teams from hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and NGOs took part in six different culinary and hospitality challenges during the day, and were assessed on their teamwork, creativity, and speed by a panel of sixteen local and international judges. Many of the challenges were gruelling with several elimination rounds held before a winner was announced.

Sophai and his teammate Sok Vichetm, credit their long tenure as chefs at Angkor Palace as crucial in helping to prepare them for the mystery box competition. Before starting work in the restaurant business, Sophai said he learned to cook several Cambodian and Thai recipes at refugee camp in Thailand.

“I think the competition made me love my profession more. At first I thought I cannot compete with these other cooks because they are also from the five stars hotels, but we won in the end.” he said.

Straight after the mystery box contest, Gnov Sopheakdey from Samaki Cafe in Battambang, grabbed the crowd’s attention with an impressive performance in the barista section of the competition.

Blowing his competitors away, Sopheakdey took home a $300 cash prize, defending, the culinary reputation of Battambang, during a competition mostly dominated by staff from restaurants and hotels in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

Other winners included Long Borey from Riverhouse Lounge, who was unanimously selected as Cambodia’s best bartender, while Hagar Restaurant employee Lay Maly stuck up for smaller establishments with a victory in the fruit carving contest.

A team from Phnom Penh’s exclusive Topaz Restaurant & Piano Bar triumphed in a second black box contest, this one involving foreign ingredients, before Mao Srey Pov and Ngorn Sokhoeun from K-West Restaurant took home the “best bed-making” prize.

Minister of Tourism, Thong Khon, hailed the competition as a success, and said he would like to see it repeated next year as it segues with the government’s goal of promoting Cambodia as a fine dining destination.

“Food, beverage, and hospitality competitions are an essential factor in strengthening the quality of tourism services we provide in Cambodia. Cambodian foods have a special taste, compared to foods in other countries, and with the creativity of Cambodian cooks, they can make tourists remember their dishes and want to return to Cambodia,” he said.

November-February: Cool and dry. Average mid-day temperatures in the mid 20s, sometime dipping below 20 at night. The monsoon rains trail off through October and November, and have usually stopped completely by mid November. These months - November through February - are generally considered to be the best time of year to visit, with December and January offering the very best weather of the year across the country - comfortably warm days, clear skies, no rain, light breeze, cool evenings. Ideal beach weather in Sihanoukville. A comfortable time of year to visit the temples near Siem Reap. Temperatures begin to creep up a bit through February and there are occasional, short 'mango showers' in the afternoon.

Cambodia National Bird

One of our Japanese guest's wrote inside the TripAdvisor.Jp. We taking the liberty to (unofficial) translate this text for your reference:

“We were satisfied” Some hotels say they have Japanese staff but we actually never saw their face during our stay however, at this hotel we could see Japanese staff everyday, which made us very happy.

All the staff were friendly and we felt very confortable during our stay. Benefits from the hotel such as massage and hi-tea was very nice too.

Only one thing disappointed us, which was that they were kind of late to serve hi-tea and dinner even the restaurant wasn’t so packed but it was ok, and was acceptable.

They had a souvenir shop in the resort, but it didn’t have anything like bottles of water, so we had to take a walk 5min to 10min from the resort to the shop outside. (But the hotel provided 1 bottle of water for each person everyday). It was dark at night so after the tour we could go by tour car.

There was one famous shop for aroma goods near the resort. (But we had to cross the road) It was good, only 15min from the Airport. (Other hotels were also not too far from the Airport) There were many aroma pots in the resot and we were very happy with the fragrance of lemonglass because we love aroma!

よく「日本人スタッフ常駐」と言いながら、ホテル滞在中に一度もお見掛けしないホテルもあるのですが、こちらでは毎日どこかで日本人スタッフの方とお会いする事ができました。

ホテルの全従業員の感じがよく、とても居心地が良かったです。

ホテルからのおもてなしのアロママッサージ、ハイティーも、満足です。いい記念になりました。夕飯もハイティーも同じレストランだったのですが、混んでいない割には少々時間がかかりましたが、スローフード？？な感じで許容範囲です。

お土産店はありましたが、お水などを買うコンビニのようなお店がないため、ホテルから徒歩５～１０分以内のところにある食品雑貨店まで行く必要があります。

（お水は１日１本もらえますが。）夜は暗いため、オプショナルに参加して戻る途中に寄ってもらいました。アロマグッズで有名なお店もホテルの近くにありました。

（ただし道路を横断する必要あり。）空港から１５分程度なのもよかったです。（他のホテルも空港から近いけど。）またアロマポットがところどころに置いてあり、レモングラス（？）の香りが漂っていました。

Soluxe sees room for growth in hotel management deals

BEIJING - Soluxe Hospitality Group, a Beijing-based internationalhotel operator, is seeking to export its management expertise.

Its first such arrangement began on Aug 1 in Siem Reap, Cambodia,where it put the Angkor Palace Resort & Spa under its Grand Soluxebrand and assumed management of the hotel.

"We hope that through our partnership with the Soluxe HospitalityGroup, we can help this country attract more well-heeled Chinesetourists to visit our magnificent Angkor temples," said Ly Hong, aChinese-Cambodian and owner of the renamed Grand SoluxeAngkor Palace Resort & Spa.

Siem Reap is the gateway to the Angkor Wat complex, which features centuries of remains ofthe Khmer Empire.

Soluxe Hospitality Group has already established a presence in the emerging economies ofAfrica, South America and Europe. The group is now seeking to make inroads into countriessuch as Germany, Italy, France and Spain, according to Tim Gao, general manager of ChinaNational Petroleum Corp International Hotel Management Co Ltd, the parent of Soluxe.

"Every segment of the tourism and hospitality industry is aware of China's increasing presenceand role on the global stage," said Weng Aow, general manager of Grand Soluxe AngkorPalace Resort & Spa, who was named as the hotel's new manager.

Soluxe Hospitality Group invests in or owns more than 60 hotels in Asia under various brands:Grand Soluxe, Soluxe Courtyard and Soluxe Inn. Now, it is seeking to market its managementexpertise separately.

Soluxe wants to take advantage of the changing aspirations of Chinese outbound tourists.Such travelers no longer go just to see a few famous sites but increasingly want to enjoy exoticand luxurious destinations.

In the case of Cambodia, visa applications have been simplified and many airports, includingthose in Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming and Chengdu, provide direct charter flights to and fromSiem Reap.

All these factors are drawing more Chinese visitors to the Southeast Asian country.

In the first half, 1.13 million Chinese tourists visited Cambodia, a year-on-year increase of 35percent, according to Jin Yuan, economic and commercial counselor of the Chinese embassy inCambodia.

But Chinese tourists are not Soluxe's sole target market. Gao said that as the group seeks to"export" its hotel management concepts, it is also has its eye on Western travelers and citiessuch as Frankfurt, Paris and London.

Today, I would like to say thank all distinguished guests to Angkor Palace for coming to witness the official inauguration ceremony to become a member of 5-star hotels under the name "Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort & Spa".

Siem Reap is one of the hottest tourists' destinations in Asia. It is because this province is culturally and historically attractive. I am very glad that our hotel has played an important part in attracting tourists to this destination.

I have been most interested in the wonderful Angkor Wat for many years, and started to draw the blueprint to build this hotel to reflect the architecture of many temple which are more than 1000 years old.

The construction of this hotel started in 2011, and we are very particular to ensure that the building structure will reflect the national identity, Khmer cultural heritage, making our guests to recognize the beauty of our Cambodia.

We have tried to utilize the local materials for the construction and for decorating rooms. Moreover, we also have incorporated the existing local methods, skills and knowledge in the construction. Currently, our hotel has 259 rooms for guests and 320 staff, and this is one small contribution to creating employment for Cambodians together with the Royal Government.

This hotel is built on 11 hectares. With this spacious location, I believe that guests would enjoy their holidays in our glorious land of Angkor. In addition, we, as well as the leaders and all staff, are paying much attention on preserving the natural environment, by leaving many trees in their old place to surround this hotels with green garden.

I am very proud and satisfied with the contribution and encouragement of His Excellencies, Lok Okhna, Lok Chumteav, Ladies and gentlemen, local and foreign business partners, leaders and all staff of the hotel. It is with such contribution that our hotel becomes famous and is recognized locally and internationally in terms of perfect service to all tourists. In Particular, recently we have received the 5-star award "Would Luxury Hotel Award" two times in 2010 and 2011, which will be presented to us in the Republic of Croatia in mid-September.

First of all, on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and myself, I have the great honor and pleasure to participate with Excellencies, Lok Chumteavs, ladies and gentlemen in the auspicious official opening of Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort & Spa in this enchanting morning.

Today, Siem Reap province is proud to welcome the new tourism facility of Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort & Spa which is to be officially launched in the moment. Taking this opportunity, I would like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciations to Mr. Ly Hong, Chairman of Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort & Spa, who has made significant efforts in investing on this luxury hotel bearing the famous brand name in the precious land of Siem Reap-Angkor.

Tourism as a system is a priority sector which contributes to building up socio-economic development, job opportunities, income generation, improvement of livelihood and poverty reduction. Tourism is ia vital part of green economy since its revenue is directly integrated into national economic current taking part in enhancing GDP growth and stabilizing commercial balance. Following global economic crisis, economy has surged rapidly. In 2010, the world tourists were registered of around 935 million, an increase of 6.7%, in which Asia-Pacific, America, Europe, Middle East increased 13%, 8%, 3%, 6% and 14%, respectively. Tourism creates 230 million employments, equivalent to 7.6% of total global labor forces.

In 2010, ASEAN region received around 65 million tourists, an increase of around 12.5%, in which Intra-ASEAN travelers recorded around 28 million (shared 45%) while Chinese, Japanese and Korean tourists surged 23% to 15 million.

Cambodia, under the sound and brilliant leadership of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HUN Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, tourism, known as “Culture and Nature Tourism", has been considered as one of the top 10 priority sectors in pushing up socio-economic development. Tourism, which is determined in the Rectangular Strategy of the Royal Government of Cambodia, is also considered as the “Green Gold" while rice is considered “White Gold".

In 2010, Cambodia’s domestic tourists were around 7.7 iinillion, an increase of around 8%; while international tourists were recorded around 2.5 million, an increase of 16%; in which tourists from Asia-Pacific were 1.7 million, shared around 67.70% of total arrivals (in which more than 800,000 from ASEAN of around 23.2%); Europe: 463.096 (around 19.51%); America: 182.850 (around 7.94%); other regions shared around 0.49%. Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, American, French, England, Thailand, Australian and Taiwanese tourists are the top 10 sourte markets of Cambodia. lt should be noted that, Russian and Indian tourists have be increasing remarkably.

Cambodia Tourism plays essential role in contributing to macro-economic stability and gains national revenue of around 1,700 million dollars, shared 12% of GDP in previous year whilst creating around 400,000 employments for Cambodian people.

Siem Reap-Angkor is the country’s main cultural-historical tourist destinations receiving international tourists around 1 million (shared around 60%) of total international tourists every year and domestic toprists of around l million.

Connectivity from this area to its peri-zones including PreahVihear temple area and Tonle Sap Biosphere zone and linkage to the coastal zones when our bay has been admitted as the fully-fledged member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club and various eco-tourism areas around the country will surely make the well-known cultural-historical Siem Reap-Angkor become sophisticated.

According to statistical projection, Cambodia will receive around 8 million international tourists in 2020, in which Siem Reap-Angkor will obtain around 4 million (excluding domestic tourists). Therefore, thorough consideration on tourism development in this area, including Angkor area, Siem Reap city, and Tonle Sap area to develop this area in a responsible and sustainable manner is our pivotal strategy.

Accommodation service, particularly hotel is the leading service which plays core role in tourism industry.

The official opening of the new brand name of Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort & Spa truly responses to the market trend, which contributes to upgrading hotel industry quality and essentially promoting Cambbdia to the international market.

I strongly hope that this new brand name will attract more international tourists, especially Chinese tourists to visit Siem Reap province as well as Cambodia while Siem Reap province as well as Cambodia have been seen of fast-growing development.

Angkor hotel targets high-end Chinese market

THE ANGKOR Palace Resort and Spa will be rebranded from today as the Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort and Spa to attract more high-end Chinese visitors.

The property’s chairman and owner, Ly Hong, said: “We have noticed that the hotels in Cambodia have not been able to attract many of the high-yielding Chinese tourists to visit Angkor temple complex.”

River Fish Amok (អាម៉ុកត្រី) is a traditional dish of Cambodian cuisine. It is fish coated in a thick coconut milk with kroeung, either steamed or baked in a cup made from banana leaves. It is often eaten during the Water Festival, which celebrates the reversal of the Tonle Sap River.[1]. Essential to the dish is the addition of the leaves of the noni tree and the use of fingerroot.

Kbach Kun Khmer Boran ( Martial Art ) "Bokator"

Bokator, known formally as Labokatao, is a Cambodian martial art form that involves close hand-to-hand combat, ground techniques and weapons.

Bokator is one of the earliest Cambodian martial art and is said to be the close quarter combat system used by the armies during the Angkor era.

Practitioners are trained to strike with knees, elbows, hands, feet and even the head. Short sticks are commonly used as weapon.

Angkor Palace Resort & Spa has several environmentally friendly practices in place to conserve the natural environment. These include water saving campaign for in-house guests, using energy saving lights and treating waste water to maintain the lush garden in the 11-hectare site.

Recently the resort was awarded as the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard Award in the second running years (i.e.; 2008-2009 and 2010-2011) which was presided over by Cambodia’ Acting Minister of Tourism – H.E Mr. Sam Prom Nea & Siem Reap Governor – H.E Dr. Sou Phirin.

The only reason that we have achieved this is because of the five star hotel resort’s compliance with environmentally friendly and energy conservation measures.

The ASEAN established the tourism standards as one measure in the road map for the integration of the tourism sector to realize the ASEAN economic community. Cambodian Pchum Ben or Soul Day - Running for 15 days from the end of September into October, and the exact date determined by the lunar calendar, this festival is dedicated to blessing the spirits of the dead, and is one of the most culturally significant in Cambodia.

Each household visits their Buddhist temple and offers food to the monks for their assistance in blessing the souls of late ancestors, relatives and friends. Pagodas are crowded with people taking their turn to make offerings, with many staying behind to listen to Buddhist sermons.

Cambodians believe that although most living creatures are reincarnated at death, due to bad karma, some souls are not reincarnated but rather remain trapped in the spirit world. Each year, for fifteen days, these souls are released from the spirit world to search for their living relatives, meditate and repent.

The fifteen-day observance of Prachum Benda, or Ancestors' Day, is a time for living relatives to remember their ancestors and offer food to those unfortunate enough to have become trapped in the spirit world. Furthermore, it is an important opportunity for living relatives to meditate and pray to help reduce the bad karma of their ancestors, thus enabling the ancestors to become reincarnated and leave the torment and misery of the spirit world.

GROUND-HANDLING mon-opolies at major Asian airports continue to hurt growth in the industry, though Cambodia’s own operations still may not warrant extra companies, an industry expert told the Post at an international conference in Siem Reap this week.

About 140 senior aviation ground handling specialists from around the world attended the third annual Asian Ground Handling International Conference, a three-day event held at the Angkor Palace Resort and Spa that finished Thursday.

“Asia is still monopolistic compared to Europe, with both open-skies policies and use of ground handlers,” conference chairman Tim Ornellas said on the sidelines of the conference. “Liberalisation is the key word: the freeing up of the ground-handling market in Asia. There has to be freedom of choice but within reason because if there are too many handlers a price war could break out.

“The growth of the independent ground-handling business in Asia is being restricted in many Asia countries by governments who seek to control handling operations,” Ornellas said in a statement ahead of the conference.

The EU broke European monopolies in 1996 “by setting certain benchmarks in regards to the number of passengers and the volume of cargo”, Ornellas, who is also the owner and publisher of the UK-based Ground Handling International magazine, told the Post.

Ornellas declined to name the major monopolistic airports in the region, but he said Cambodia’s volumes might not warrant extra companies.

Gross received his undergraduate degree from Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1962 and then returned to the United States to continue his education at the University of California, Berkeley, from where he received his Ph.D. in physics in 1966. He left Berkeley later that year to serve as a junior fellow at Harvard University.David J. Gross began his professional teaching career at Princeton University in 1969 and was appointed professor of physics in 1972. During that same period, between 1970 and 1975, he also became a fellow at the Sloan Foundation. David J. Gross remained at Princeton until 1996, where he was named Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics (1986-1995) and Thomas Jones Professor of Mathematical Physics (1995-1997). In 1997 he was appointed director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, a position he holds until this day.

Cambodian chefs are beginning to make their mark in the local hospitality industry, and in Siem Reap they are emerging as masters of both Khmer and Western cuisine.

A typical example in Ving San, executive chef at Angkor Palace Resort & Spa. A veteran of upscale hotel kitchens, Ving San has worked in two of Phnom Penh’s premier hostelries: the former Hotel Sofitel Cambodiana, from 1992 until 1997, and then at Raffles Hotel Le Royal until 2003.

He moved to Siem Reap for a brief stint at Sofitel Royal Angkor, and joined Angkor Palace Resort & Spa in November 2003, where, as well as currently being a dab hand at international cuisine, he also lovingly creates Cambodian food in all its former glory.

“Many people don’t really know what Khmer food is,” Ving San lamented. “So I create dishes today in the hope that my own country’s food will become world renowned”.

He has taken his first steps toward achieving this with his culinary tour de force dubbed Royal Khmer Cuisine. A special introductory taste of gourmet Cambodian food, it is a request only feast, available at the Angkor Palace Resort’s Soriya Restaurant for USD 42 per person.

This superb sampler menu kicks off with a mise en bouche of fish amok, before moving on to a combination salad comprising mango, scallops and crispy purses, and rounding off part one of the experience with a Cambodian pumpkin soup.

Next comes a pair of main fare tasters, starting with a visually dramatic, grilled Tonle Sap prawn dish served with sticky ice, kale, and black bean sauce. This is followed by a grilled beef on lemongrass skewer served with delectable Cambodian pickles. Dessert is dubbed ”Pumpkin Custard” but is actually sweet banana and coconut milk in sago.

Many degustation-style menus are big on taste and miserly in quantity, but the Royal Khmer Cuisine fare borders on an endurance test as servings are generous and, with six courses on offer, the food keeps on a-coming.

This special menu was also devised following Hun Sen’s relatively recent decree the Khmer food must replace French cuisine at state and government functions, which prompted chefs to further explore the gourmet qualities of Khmer cuisine.

One of the standouts on Ving San’s Royal Khmer Cuisine menu is the fist amok. Many gustatory crimes are committed on a daily basis in Siem Reap in the name of amok, which is often rendered as a cheap bog-backpacker variant of a vegetable stew laced with sad smidgeons of seemingly boiled fish or chicken.

But Ving San’s fish amok is an art form in itself; a delicious, creamy taste-bomb that literally melts in the mouth. Ving San wryly comments, “Everywhere in Siem Reap they have amok, but our amok is not the same as they do it in Pub Street.

“Here we use many special ingredients, such as Khmer herbs. We make the amok as a delicacy, and that is what makes it different form outside. On the street here they make it with many vegetables, but we do only the fist.”

Ving San’s fish amok has the consistency of a piscatorial crème caramel, and he beams when the texture is complimented.

“Yes, we do it every creamy,” he acknowledges. “We simply add coconut cream.”

Most tourist attractions are just that, tourist attractions. Their beauty, grandeur, elegance, history and experience are often marred by too many people and that typical holiday vibe that emits from them. Thankfully, the vibe at the mesmerizing temples of Angkor in Siem Reap is very different. In the peak season, they are busy with people, but a lack of clunky additions, modern food vendors or westernized ‘experience’ packages, makes them feel more natural, more real. This experience is perfectly reflected by the Angkor Palace Resort & Spa, a well-equipped venue 20 minutes from the temples of Angkor, in the heart of town.

It’s only ten minutes from Siem Reap International Airport and upon arrival you are not thrust out of Cambodia and into this faraway fairy land, as is typical with most resorts, but instead guided into an elegant extension of the region. A welcome drink and traditional scarf are offered as you begin to notice the understated features of
resort. Interestingly, the owner of the establishment, a local, is the architect and mastermind behind the resort’s perfectly Cambodian persona. Your first taste of which is in the main lobby which is bold, but simple and intriguing, yet calm.

The rooms also relate to the intimate local culture. They feel very homely, yet manage to fi t in all the creature comforts of home, including complimentary internet. And the rooms overlooking the pool provide the added benefit of one of Asia’s most sensual sunsets. Thanks to the countries troubled past, the massage is not as popular as its Thai cousin, but is something that should be experienced. It has certain similarities but demonstrates a slightly gentler touch. After a hard day temple hunting it’s a great way to be treated like the kings who built them.

Cambodian delights and a selection of western fare make up the menu of the resort’s main restaurant. A must try is the Royal Khmer Cuisine menu, available upon request. It’s a seven course event that showcases
the best local dishes. It’s derived from a traditional royal menu and is an experience unto its own. It’s fitting in the surroundings and a perfect way to feel like the royalty who govern this charming part of Asia.

Although it has the stamp of a Summit Group resort, the Angkor Palace Resort & Spa is a local family business, with a genuinely local experience. It’s the only five star resorts that is designed and owned by a Cambodian. So, if you’re coming to Cambodia for an escape that will allow you to experience true Cambodian culture, then this resort is nearly as grand as the temples that surround it.

Covering many sectors, these include the care of children, (orphanages, day centres & schools), education, agricultural development, infrastructure, women's issues, health, the care and rehabilitation of land mine victims, and environmental & biodiversity protection, etc.

The primary aim of ConCert is to reduce poverty by increasing the amount of support given to the organisations in and around Siem Reap. Angkor Palace Resort & Spa was selected as the venue for teams from Philips Lighting to compete in the 10-day long semi-finals of the Philip Lighting Group Quality Improvement Competition Asia in May.

Over 200 participants including jury members from China, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Korea, Singapore, Holland and Britain (Jury and organizers) converged in Siem Reap for a series of activities to compete for a place in the semi-finals for the world final in Marrakesh in June.

The teams from national representatives of Philips Lighting offices in Asia presented various ideas to improve their quality services such as cost and energy savings as well as environmentally friendly operations to the jury. Other non-competition activities included lunch at the floating village at Tonle Sap Lake and a sunset visit to the legendary Angkor Wat…

1. Take a Trip to Banteay Srei Temple: Located about 41km from Angkor Palace Resort & Spa, this Hindu temple was built in the late 10th century. C.E. Banteay Srei, which means "Citadel of the women", displays some of the finest examples of classic Khmer art. The walls are densely covered with some of the most beautiful, deep and intricate carvings of any Angkorian temple. The temple's relatively small size, pink sandstone construction and ornate design give it a fairyland ambiance (quoted by Siem Reap Angkor Visitor Guide Book, 27th Edition, April-July 2008, page: 26). Top Tip: Put on your comfortable shoes, and dress respectfully as this is a Buddhist country. Be polite, have fun and enjoy yourself. Drivers usually charge a fee in addition to their normal daily charge for the trip.

2. Sunrise at Angkor Wat: Sunrise over Angkor Wat is a virtual pre-requisite of any visit to Siem Reap and the Angkor temple complex nearby. A view of Angkor Wat at sunrise is what many, many people dream about. In Japan it is a symbol for beauty of nature combined with ancient craftsmanship. 3. Sunset at Phnom (Hill) Bakheng: Bakheng is the name of the temple located on the top of the mountain about 65m high. Many travelers always wonder – what does Khmer food look and taste like; is it similar to other ASEAN nation food?

Prior to joining Angkor Palace Resort & Spa, our Executive Chef Ving San (pictured) has spent much of his professional career researching, together with his previous colleagues , the Royal recipes of Royal Khmer Cuisine that were lost for two decades during Cambodia war.

The Royal recipes have been carefully prepared by The Royal Palace' Chefs in the 1960s(?) and only served for the Royal family, dignitaries and guests of the King.

Ving San said “Royal Khmer Cuisine is the menu represented at The Royal Palace in the Kingdom of Cambodia and this menu has been used for welcoming guests to The Royal Palace. I am delighted to introduce the selected receipes from our finest traditional Khmer cuisine, to our hotel guests at The Palace. As a Cambodian, I fully understand the characteristics of each ingredient, and I am familiar with culinary treasures from each province of Cambodia.”

A popular signature dish presented by Chef San from the Royal Khmer Cuisine is the baked large prawn from Tonle Sap Lake dressed in a mild spicy curry sauce. According to Chef Ving San, “I am pleased that our guests from Asia to Europe enjoy this particular dish very much.”

Chef Ving San and his team are busy finalizing the menu for the new Royal Khmer Restaurant in the resort (scheduled to open in third quarter of 2009). He explains, “The world is globalised nowadays and major Asian cuisines, i.e.; Japanese, Chinese, Korean, are available all over the world, but Khmer cuisine is unique to Cambodia and this is one of the key experiences for visitors to Cambodia to try.”

Preferred Deal Struck

The deal struck earlier last year to incorporate Siem Reap's Angkor Palace Resort & Spa into the Preferred Hotel Group, part of the Summit Hotels & Resorts brand of more than 150 international hotels, was officially announced by the group in Hong Kong last week.

The hotel is the first Cambodian-owned luxury five-star resort and its design reflects traditional Khmer architecture.It features 251 guestrooms and suites and eight villas, all furnished in Cambodian style with inlaid teak floors and traditional poster beds. Balconies overlook the gardens of the resort, which is managed by the personable Weng Aow.

It also features four restaurants and bars, and the Kainnora Spa, with nine treatment rooms and four spa villas offering a wide range of "holistic body treatments", including traditional Khmer massage.It has a gym, two tennis courts and a large outdoor swimming pool. A new feature is a golf driving range within the hotel grounds, with 16 sheltered driving bays.

"Siem Reap is one of the major tourism hotspots in Asia, and we are thrilled to be partnered with a hotel that is truly representative of genuine Cambodian hospitality. We aim to bring high-end FIT and MICE business to the city and to the resort through our global channels," said Mark Simmons, area managing director for Preferred Hotel Group's Asia-Pacific operations, in a Hong Kong-released statement.

This makes the Angkor Palace Resort & Spa a sort of sister hotel to the soon-to-be-opened Sothea Courtyard luxury boutique hotel, which is a member of the Preferred Boutique "collection", also a division of the Preferred Hotel Group.

Rebuilding Cambodia

CAMBODIA first became a part of my life in 1997 when I volunteered for a project there for Raffles International.I went to bring over the pioneer batch of Cambodian hospitality trainees from Phnom Penh to our hotels in Singapore for systematic on-the-job training.

These trainees would eventually form the backbone of the hospitality industry in Cambodia. Back in 1997 when Raffles was preparing for the opening of its two properties in Cambodia, there were hardly any skilled hospitality workers to speak of, given the tragic past of the kingdom.

In 1997, not many foreigners were keen to work in Cambodia. The country was going through political turmoil and there was no stability. Having personally experienced the rough political situation and lawlessness, including the evacuation of foreigners, I felt a calling to be here and a strong desire to be part of the country's rebuilding efforts.Having been trained as an officer in the SAF, I was grateful that my training came in handy during this crisis.

We in Singapore have been very fortunate to be living in a peaceful environment and this crisis was an eye-opener for me. I do not see myself as just a hotelier but prefer to look at this as a vocation to help the locals improve their lives through imparting skills and knowledge.

Today, I am managing a Cambodian-owned 259-room Angkor Palace Resort & Spa with a staff strength of nearly 300. Called 'The Palace in Siem Reap', it is an authentic Cambodian designed and built resort. The Palace sits on a land area of 11 hectares and comes with its own golf driving range.

The people here have gone through so much political volatility and social unrest. I feel it's my calling to help them regain their lost heritage and pride, and rebuild their homes. The Cambodians are eager to move on and are motivated to improve their lives. Their innate charm and warmth make them natural candidates for the hospitality industry.

In October 2008, the resort embarked on a Responsible Tourism programme which aims to better the lives of the community. These include classroom construction for impoverished villages and training for teachers, purchase of school materials, and toilet and well building projects in the rural areas. We are fortunate to have the support of our owner-cum-architect in carrying out these projects.

As far as I am aware, the number of Singaporeans in Siem Reap is probably less than 20. But in Phnom Penh, there is a Singapore Club called The Buaya Club (I kid you not) with a membership of over a few hundred formed for the purpose of golf. I am now an ardent golf enthusiast and on weekends you will find me at the Angkor Golf Club or practising at the driving range in the Resort. I am happy to play the game with any visiting Singaporean needing a partner in Siem Reap.

As a Singaporean, I have also volunteered Angkor Palace Resort as a rendezvous point for Singaporeans living in Siem Reap in the event of an emergency.

I am not sure where I will be in the long term, but I do think this is a country with lots of opportunities to offer for work or business; and most importantly, a chance to be part of history-making in the positive sense. Against a historic backdrop of monumental temples from one of the most significant eras gone by, one can't help but feel inspired to continue with the noble ideals of the ancient monarchs who once ruled this kingdom.We invite Singaporeans living overseas or posted abroad to write about life, culture and doing business where you are.

Hang reaps PATA Foundation award

Hang Vannak (pictured), e-commerce manager at the Angkor Palace Resort and Spa in Siem Reap, Cambodia has won a PATA Foundation 2009 scholarship. The award was announced at a ceremony at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The PATA Foundation awards two scholarships to member-endorsed candidates every year taking part in the 'executive program in hospitality management' developed by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel and Tourism Management and the Hong Kong Hotels Association. It provides three in-depth workshops for senior hospitality industry managers.

"The objectives are to enhance skills, deepen understanding and equip participants to stay at the cutting edge of the industry," said Terry Francis, chairman of the Foundation Board of Trustees. "The three workshop modules focus on human resources, marketing and branding, hotel sales and revenue management. Each workshop is led by respected academics as well as successful businessmen."

Hang Vannak, 28, is the first Cambodian hotel employee to have been selected by the PATA Foundation Board of Trustees. He began his hospitality career as a door boy at Raffles Hotel Le Royal in early 2000. He said, "The industry is experiencing phenomenal growth, especially in Cambodia. This scholarship gives me a golden opportunity to further understand the global perspective of the hospitality industry and further build my professional development".

Weng Aow, general manager of Angkor Palace Resort & Spa, said, "Vannak is an extremely self-motivated individual and always strives to excel in whatever he does." .
